“You Talkin’ To Me?
American Elk – Sheep Lakes, Rocky Mountain National Park
I made this photograph a week ago, tomorrow. It has become a tradition for Lori and I to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a stop at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory followed by a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, where we typically find elk to fill our viewfinders. We then cap off the day with dinner at one of the restaurants in Estes Park.
This bull, along with four others, was hanging out at Sheep Lakes in the west end of Horseshoe Park. A few week earlier, there was a group of approximately 60 bulls hanging out in Horseshoe Park. Many of them were still there when we worked this small group, but they are already in the process of splitting off into smaller groups. Now that the rut is over, competition between the bulls has subsided and they typically hang out together in small groups, called bachelor groups, the remainder of the year. I was also able to get a couple of fairly nice images of this guy’s friends.
This Valentine’s, we enjoyed dinner at Nicky’s. I had a New York strip and Lori a top sirloin . . . and chocolates for desert.
Now, let’s take a look at this year’s workshop lineup . . .
June 7-10 Rocky Mountain Nature Photography Boot Camp $695
Leaders: Weldon Lee & Lori Huff
This boot camp covers it all – macro, landscape, and wildlife photography. It includes critical topics missed by those photographers who have never used film and will help them understand why it is important to do certain things. Spend four intensive days in the heart of the Rocky Mountains with Lori Huff and Weldon Lee during their Rocky Mountain Nature Photography Boot Camp as they share what they’ve learned over the years in their pursuit of nature photography. You’ll learn how to use fill-flash when photographing our wild brothers and sisters. Correct exposures will no longer be a mystery. The mysteries of the histogram will be unlocked. The elements of composition, reciprocal values, how to calculate depth of field, will be covered in depth. You’ll even have the opportunity to review the Sunny f/16 rule. You will learn all these techniques . . . and, much more. Afternoons take place in the classroom, while mornings will find you in the splendor of Rocky Mountain National Park practicing those things you learned the previous day in the classroom.

June 14-17 Wild Horses of the West $695
Leaders: Weldon Lee & Lori Huff
Photograph bands of wild horses – tails and manes flying in the air – as they thunder across the open plains. This photo adventure takes place on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, near Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Participants will have the opportunity to photograph three separate herds – White Sands, Catnip, and the Gila herds. The Catnips feature a number of beautifully marked horses, including one war bonnet, while the Gilas, based on DNA testing, are today’s closest living ancestors of those horses originally brought to the new world by the Spanish conquestidors. Several members of this herd know me well enough that it is not uncommon for them to actually come up and sniff my beard. Classroom sessions, including critiques from the field, are scheduled each day.

Sept 20-23 Rocky Mountain Digital Photography Boot Camp $695
Leaders: Weldon Lee & Lori Huff
Spend four intensive days in the heart of the Rocky Mountains with Weldon Lee learning how to preform a number of Photoshop tasks without using Photoshop. You will learn how to work with layers and layer masks and how to replace dull, boring skies with ones of breath-taking beauty. The ability to add creative effects and enhancements, plus remove unwanted distractions, will now be yours. You can finally become the photographic artist you dreamed of and begin creating true works of art. DxO and Perfect Photo Suite are the software programs taught in this boot camp. They produce better quality images . . . and, they’re a whole lot easier to learn than Photoshop. Best of all, you will not need to purchase them for the workshop. You can install free trial versions allowing you to test the software and purchase it at a later date. There’s an added benefit – this workshop occurs during the annual elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park, where . . . in addition to the classroom . . . you will also spend part of you time.

Hi Weldon,
Am interested in the Wild Horses of the West trip! Sounds very interesting!
Also, if you get B&W magazine, 2 of my images were published in the Single Image December Issue.
Have been emailing with Nancy Wilson who I met on my 1st photo trip with you in Alaska.
Kathy
Good hearing from you, Kathy. It would be nice if you could join us in South Dakota. I know you would have a great time. Congratulations on have a couple of your images published in B&W magazine.
Beautiful photo, Weldon!!! I really like the colors and how they work together in this wonderful pose, beautifully composed and very evocative of the great landscape we are so blessed to have in our back yard. I would offer it for sale if I did a show!
Mel
Thank you for your wonderful comments, Mel. Lori and I are really looking forward to getting together with you and Jan this Saturday.
Weldon,
I just wanted to compliment you on the new bull elk picture. It is awesome! I think you should bring it with you this summer when you go to the art festivals.
Joyce Edson
Great hearing from you, Joyce. Thank you for your wonderful comments.. You’re the second person suggesting I should present it at the art festivals this summer.
I like the colors and the detail in this image, but to be honest, I find the pose the bull is in to be awkward, and not that attractive. Would rather his head was more straight on towards the camera.
Thank you for you constructive criticism, John. I really appreciate it and will definitely take it into consideration.
Good Day,
I am interested in the Wild Horses, Viola however is an invalid and needs a walker to get around. Could you keep me in mind and send me details on this one ?
Geo
